Spain pet travel requirements
for dogs, cats, and ferrets

Spain applies standard EU pet travel rules — your EU Pet Passport and current rabies vaccination are all you need for most pets.

Rabies 21-day rule EU Pet Passport

What your pet needs for Spain entry

  1. 1

    Microchip (ISO 11784/11785)

Must be implanted before or on the same day as the rabies vaccination.

  2. 2

Rabies vaccination — 21-day wait for primary vaccines

Boosters given within validity have no wait. Lapsed boosters restart the 21-day clock.

  3. 3

EU Pet Passport or Animal Health Certificate (AHC)

EU/EEA-origin pets need a valid EU Pet Passport; arrivals from other countries need a government-endorsed AHC issued within 10 days of travel.

Travelling to Spain with your pet

Spain's warm climate, long Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines, and culture of outdoor living make it one of Europe's top pet-friendly holiday destinations. The Canary Islands are especially popular for northern European pet owners, and pets can travel by ferry between the islands and mainland Spain using standard EU documentation.

Spain follows EU Regulation 576/2013 without additional national requirements for dogs, cats, and ferrets. A valid microchip, current rabies vaccination (with 21-day wait for primary vaccines), and EU Pet Passport for intra-EU travel are all that's needed. Pets from outside the EU/EEA need a government-endorsed Animal Health Certificate issued within 10 days of travel.

There is no tapeworm treatment requirement, no mandatory pre-arrival notification, and no quarantine. Spanish customs carry out documentary and identity checks at international ports of entry.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take my pet to the Canary Islands from mainland Spain without additional paperwork?
The Canary Islands are an EU outermost region with the same pet travel rules as mainland Spain. No additional documentation is required for pets travelling between mainland Spain and the Canaries — your EU Pet Passport covers the entire Spanish territory including the islands.
Does Spain have breed-specific legislation for dogs?
Spain has historically maintained a breed-specific list including Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Rottweilers, and others. However, individual regions (autonomous communities) have increasingly moved toward behaviour-based regulations. Check with your specific destination's regional authority for current rules.
Is tapeworm treatment needed for dogs entering Spain?
No. Spain has no tapeworm (Echinococcus) treatment requirement. Only five European destinations require it: Great Britain, Ireland, Finland, Norway, and Malta.
