Travelling to Slovenia with your pet

Slovenia is a compact but diverse EU destination — within a few hours you can move from the Julian Alps to the Adriatic coast or the Pannonian plain. The country follows standard EU Regulation 576/2013, with no additional requirements beyond a valid rabies vaccination and the appropriate health document. Young pets under 16 weeks are permitted under standard EU rules with an owner declaration.

Slovenia has a strong nature tourism culture and dogs are widely accepted on hiking trails (on a lead) and in national park areas. Lake Bled, the Soča Valley, and the Triglav National Park are popular with pet-owning visitors. Bratislava and Vienna are each within two hours by road, making Slovenia a natural stop on longer European road trips.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my dog to Triglav National Park in Slovenia?
Dogs are welcome in Triglav National Park and must be kept on a lead throughout the park. At Lake Bled, dogs must also remain leashed in public areas. Standard EU travel documents apply — a valid EU Pet Passport (EU/EEA pets) or AHC (non-EU pets) is sufficient to enter Slovenia.
Does Slovenia have any specific entry requirements beyond standard EU rules?
No — microchip, valid rabies vaccination, and a valid EU Pet Passport or AHC are all that is needed. No titer test, no quarantine, no advance notification required.
Can I enter Slovenia via the Adriatic coast from Croatia?
Yes — both Slovenia and Croatia are EU members. There are no internal border pet checks between them. Your EU Pet Passport (or AHC for non-EU pets) is sufficient at any crossing point including the Dragonja road border on the Istrian peninsula.
