Portugal pet travel requirements
for dogs, cats, and ferrets

Portugal follows standard EU pet travel rules — your EU Pet Passport and current rabies vaccination are all you need for most pets.

Rabies 21-day rule EU Pet Passport

What your pet needs for Portugal entry

  1. 1

    Microchip (ISO 11784/11785)

Must be implanted before or on the same day as the rabies vaccination.

  2. 2

Rabies vaccination — 21-day wait for primary vaccines

Boosters given within validity have no wait. Lapsed boosters restart the 21-day clock.

  3. 3

EU Pet Passport or Animal Health Certificate (AHC)

EU/EEA-origin pets need a valid EU Pet Passport; arrivals from other countries need a government-endorsed AHC issued within 10 days of travel.

Travelling to Portugal with your pet

Portugal has a long tradition of welcoming visitors — and their pets. The Algarve beach resorts, the Douro Valley, Lisbon's cobbled streets, and the Azores archipelago are all accessible to pet owners with standard EU travel documentation.

Portugal applies EU Regulation 576/2013 without additional national requirements for dogs, cats, and ferrets. A valid microchip, current rabies vaccination (21-day wait for primary vaccines), and EU Pet Passport for EU/EEA travel covers you. Pets from outside the EU/EEA need a government-endorsed AHC valid for 10 days. There is no tapeworm treatment requirement, no pre-arrival notification, and no quarantine.

Note that the Azores and Madeira are EU autonomous regions of Portugal — the same documentation applies, though transportation involves air or sea travel. Portugal's official veterinary authority is the DGAV (Direção-Geral de Alimentação e Veterinária).

Frequently asked questions

Do pets travelling to the Azores or Madeira need extra documentation?
No. The Azores and Madeira are EU autonomous regions of Portugal, and the same EU pet travel rules apply. Your EU Pet Passport covers movement throughout Portugal including the islands. Travel is by air or sea — check airline or ferry pet policies separately.
Does Portugal have breed-specific legislation for dogs?
Yes. Portugal maintains a list of potentially dangerous breeds (raças potencialmente perigosas) including Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Rottweiler, and others. Dogs on this list require specific permits, insurance, and muzzles in public. Verify current requirements with DGAV before travelling with an affected breed.
Is tapeworm treatment required for dogs entering Portugal?
No. Portugal has no Echinococcus tapeworm treatment requirement. Tapeworm treatment is only required at Great Britain, Ireland, Finland, Norway, and Malta.
