for dogs, cats, and ferrets

Norway requires tapeworm treatment for dogs from most countries and advance notification for pets arriving from outside the EU/EEA.

Rabies 21-day rule Tapeworm treatment

What your pet needs for Norway entry

  1. 1

    Microchip (ISO 11784/11785)

Must be implanted before or on the same day as the rabies vaccination.

  2. 2

Rabies vaccination — 21-day wait for primary vaccines

Boosters given within validity have no wait. Lapsed boosters restart the 21-day clock.

  3. 3

    Tapeworm treatment (Echinococcus)

Dogs only, must be given 24–120 hours before arrival. Exempt if travelling from: FI, IE, MT, NI.

  4. 4

    Pre-arrival notification — 48h advance notice

Notify the destination veterinary authority before arrival.

  5. 5

EU Pet Passport or Animal Health Certificate (AHC)

EU/EEA-origin pets need a valid EU Pet Passport; arrivals from other countries need a government-endorsed AHC issued within 10 days of travel.

Travelling to Norway with your pet

Norway sits outside the EU but inside the EEA, and like Ireland, Finland, and Malta it is classified as Echinococcus-free. Dogs travelling to Norway from most European countries must receive a single tapeworm treatment between 24 and 120 hours before arrival. Dogs from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Finland, or Malta are exempt — but dogs from Great Britain are NOT exempt. Unlike Iceland — which requires a more complex two-step tapeworm protocol with treatments 21–28 days and 5–10 days before arrival — Norway's requirement is a single treatment in the 24–120h window.

For non-EU/EEA origin pets, a 48-hour advance notification must be submitted to Mattilsynet (Norwegian Food Safety Authority). EU/EEA pets travel on a standard EU Pet Passport; pets from outside the EEA need an AHC.

Norway has strict rules on dogs from countries with high rabies risk — ensure your vaccination is current and boosters were given within the validity period. Dogs arriving at Oslo Gardermoen or Bergen Flesland airports are inspected at the border.

Frequently asked questions

My dog is travelling from Great Britain to Norway — is tapeworm treatment required?
Yes. Great Britain is not in Norway's exempt group, despite sharing some island biosecurity characteristics with Ireland and Northern Ireland. Dogs from Great Britain must receive tapeworm treatment (praziquantel-based) from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival in Norway.
We're driving from Sweden through Norway on a road trip — do we need tapeworm treatment?
Yes, unless your dog originates from one of the exempt countries (Ireland, Northern Ireland, Finland, or Malta). Sweden is not exempt. If entering Norway with a dog from Sweden, tapeworm treatment is required within 24–120 hours before crossing the Norwegian border.
Does Norway accept EU Pet Passports?
Yes. Norway is an EEA member and accepts EU Pet Passports as equivalent to domestic pet identity documents. Pets from EU/EEA countries can use their EU Pet Passport as their primary travel document, without needing an AHC.
