Netherlands pet travel requirements
for dogs, cats, and ferrets

The Netherlands applies standard EU pet travel rules — your EU Pet Passport and current rabies vaccination are all you need.

Rabies 21-day rule EU Pet Passport

What your pet needs for Netherlands entry

  1. 1

    Microchip (ISO 11784/11785)

Must be implanted before or on the same day as the rabies vaccination.

  2. 2

Rabies vaccination — 21-day wait for primary vaccines

Boosters given within validity have no wait. Lapsed boosters restart the 21-day clock.

  3. 3

EU Pet Passport or Animal Health Certificate (AHC)

EU/EEA-origin pets need a valid EU Pet Passport; arrivals from other countries need a government-endorsed AHC issued within 10 days of travel.

Travelling to Netherlands with your pet

The Netherlands is one of Europe's most cycling-friendly, outdoor-oriented destinations — and one of the most accommodating for pet owners. Amsterdam's canal network, the Hoge Veluwe National Park, and the Delta Works shoreline are all accessible with dogs.

The Dutch apply EU Regulation 576/2013 without additional national requirements for dogs, cats, and ferrets entering the country. Standard EU documentation applies: microchip, valid rabies vaccination (21-day wait for primary vaccines; boosters within validity are immediate), and EU Pet Passport for intra-EU travel, or government-endorsed AHC within 10 days for pets from outside the EU/EEA.

The Netherlands has no tapeworm treatment requirement, no pre-arrival notification, and no quarantine for compliant pets. Dogs are widely accepted on Dutch trains (NS), trams, and buses — small pets in carriers travel free; larger dogs need a day ticket.

Frequently asked questions

Are dogs allowed on public transport in the Netherlands?
Yes. NS (Dutch Railways) allows dogs on board with a day ticket (dagkaart voor een hond); dogs must be kept calm and on a lead. Small pets in a carrier travel free. Amsterdam trams (GVB) and the metro also allow small pets in carriers at no charge.
Does the Netherlands have breed-specific legislation?
The Netherlands abolished its national pit bull ban in 2008 in favour of behaviour-based legislation. There are no nationally banned breeds. Individual municipalities may have local rules — check with the specific city council if you're travelling with a breed that has restrictions elsewhere in Europe.
My dog's primary vaccination was given 18 days ago. Can I enter the Netherlands in three days?
Yes, provided you reach 21 days on the day of travel or before. The 21-day clock starts on the date of vaccination (day 0 = vaccination day). If vaccination was on day 0, travel is permitted on day 21 or later. Double-check the date on your EU Pet Passport or AHC.
